What to Do Wednesday: Food Coloring Mix


Target Age:
Early Three-Year Old

Materials You Will Need:
  • yellow, red, blue food colors
  • 3 empty containers
  • 3 water containers

What To Do:

Mix 3 separate containers of water with each of the following: red, blue, and yellow food coloring. Have your child pick the following colors to mix: (red and blue/ red and yellow/ blue and yellow).

Have your child pour equal amounts of each into an empty container. Continue until your child makes purple, and orange, and green. Experiment with different amounts of the primary colors to see the variations in color produced.

Variations:
Write out a key for color mixing, using crayons and paper. It will say red + blue= purple, etc. Use colored circles instead of words.

Let your child experiment with color mixing when painting at the easel or a table.
