Playing Doctor

A few weeks ago I spent the day with my 3 year old grandchild Shannon, who recently had minor surgery  on her hand.  For hours we played "Doctor"- from being examined -to being put to sleep -to being casted- and on and on-  For hours she repeated her traumatic exerience and seemed to feel less traumatized as she repeated her 'trauma'-  By acting out the ordeal she was able to make sense out of what had happened to her.  You may want to encourage YOUR child to "role play" after their next expereince or before their next doctor's appointment.
